UK Pallet Collars for Return Loops: Supplier Comparison

UK dispatch buyers should compare the complete pallet, collar and lid arrangement for usable dimensions, containment and the return loop. Davpack publishes footprints, internal dimensions and ISPM15 status for its collars, while Universal Pallets and boxesandcrates focus on reconditioned or pre-owned stock.[1][2][4]

Supplier evidence comes from vendor pages, so prices and stock change and performance claims are not independently tested. Export rules come from GOV.UK guidance.[7]

Compare five UK pallet-collar suppliers

Universal Pallets

Type or condition: Reconditioned 1200×1000mm collars are listed.[1] They fold flat and can be stacked to form a wooden box. As recon stock, units may carry markings or stamps, and the product photo is only a representation; the supplier will hand-pick units if appearance matters.[1]

Compatibility and heat treatment: The collar is designed to fit a 1200×1000mm pallet.[1] A heat-treated version can be supplied if you contact Universal Pallets before ordering, and the site also lists brand-new heat-treated collars and a heat-treatment service.[1]

Ordering or delivery: Large and small orders are welcome and a national next-day delivery service is advertised, with delivery charges applied at checkout. Quantities above displayed stock require a call or email.[1]

Davpack

Type or condition: Davpack sells new wooden collars, 20mm thick and 195mm high, with corner hinges so they fold flat, plus 9mm plywood lids.[2]

Compatibility and heat treatment: Collars are listed for 800×600, 1200×800 and 1200×1000mm pallets, with internal dimensions of 760×560, 1160×760 and 1160×960mm respectively.[2] Davpack says the collars are ISPM15 heat treated and stamped, and that the 9mm plywood lids are ISPM exempt.[2]

Ordering or delivery: Prices are shown excluding VAT with quantity discounts at 5–9 and 10+ units.[2] Davpack gives an indicative standard delivery lead time and says it will contact you if an item must be manufactured.[2]

boxesandcrates

Type or condition: The supplier offers pre-owned pallet collars and says stock is quality checked for structural integrity and usability.[4]

Compatibility and heat treatment: Listed footprints are 1200×800mm Euro size and 1200×1000mm UK standard size.[4] The listing does not state heat-treatment status, so ask before ordering for export.[4]

Ordering or delivery: Small and bulk orders are supported, with collection from Oldbury, West Midlands, near M5 Junction 2, or arranged delivery at extra cost.[4] Trade pricing is by quotation.[4]

Exporta

Type or condition: Exporta sells wooden collars in premium, industrial and eco ranges, plastic collars, collar kits, and accessories such as lids, dividers, document wallets and stacking corners. It describes a wooden collar as up to six boards joined by six metal hinges.[5]

Compatibility and heat treatment: The range can be filtered by collar size from 800×600mm up to 1600×1200mm, including 1000×800, 1000×1000, 1200×800, 1200×1000 and 1200×1200mm.[5] Check treatment status on the individual wooden product page before ordering for export.[5]

Ordering or delivery: Products can be ordered online, and Exporta lists offices in Kinross and Bridgwater; delivery terms sit on a separate delivery page.[5]

All Pallet Collars

Type or condition: New wooden and plastic collars are offered, including a 330mm-high 1200×800mm plastic collar and a Cabframe 1200×1000mm collar made from 100% recycled plastic.[6]

Compatibility and heat treatment: Footprints include 600×800, 1200×800 and 1200×1000mm.[6] The vendor says all its collars can be used with any wooden or plastic pallet, without publishing test evidence for that claim.[6]

Ordering or delivery: Small quantities can be bought online, prices are shown excluding VAT, and quotations or expert callbacks are available.[6]

What the export rules require

GOV.UK guidance lists pallet collars as wood packaging material (WPM). Solid WPM used to move goods between Great Britain and other countries, including EU member states, must meet the ISPM15 standard.[7]

  • Treatment: WPM must be debarked and either heat treated (to 56°C for at least 30 continuous minutes through the whole profile of the wood) or fumigated.[7]
  • Marking: Compliant WPM carries a legible ISPM15 mark showing the two-letter country code, the producer and the treatment.[7] The mark replaces a separate phytosanitary or treatment certificate, and a certificate cannot be used instead of the mark.[7]
  • Exclusions: The rules do not apply to processed, non-solid WPM such as plywood, which is consistent with Davpack describing its plywood lids as exempt.[2][7]
  • Destination check: GOV.UK tells exporters to check whether the destination country requires ISPM15-compliant WPM, and movements from Great Britain to Northern Ireland also need treated and marked WPM.[7]

Which collars have published heat-treatment evidence?

Davpack is the only compared supplier whose collar listing states ISPM15 heat treatment and stamping for the collars themselves.[2] Universal Pallets offers heat-treated collars as a separate product or on request.[1] For boxesandcrates, Exporta and All Pallet Collars, ask the supplier which specific products are treated.

Davpack’s page also carries a general “exempt from international phytosanitary regulations” bullet. Read that against its specific statements: the plywood lids are exempt, while the solid-wood collars are compliant because they are treated and stamped.[2][7]

For export loads, ask for written confirmation identifying the exact collar and lid, and check on delivery that each solid-wood collar carries a legible ISPM15 mark.[7]

How to check pallet compatibility

Labels such as “standard”, “Euro” or “universal” are not substitutes for dimensions. Davpack publishes both external and internal dimensions, which makes it easier to confirm usable space.[2] Universal Pallets, boxesandcrates, Exporta and All Pallet Collars list footprints by pallet size.[1][4][5][6]

  • Record the pallet’s external dimensions and whether it is wooden or plastic.
  • Match those measurements to the collar footprint rather than relying on the product name.
  • Confirm how the hinges and corner fittings engage with the pallet design.
  • Request written confirmation that the specific collar fits the dimensions and pallet material supplied.
  • Ask whether a trial unit can be supplied before a bulk order.

For used purchases, Gumtree’s buying guidance advises checking that collars are the correct size and configuration for your pallets.[3]

Plastic versus wooden collars

All Pallet Collars and Exporta both offer wooden and plastic collars.[5][6] All Pallet Collars describes plastic collars as easy to clean and used in hygienic applications, including pharmaceuticals, and positions wooden collars for heavy-duty automotive, manufacturing and construction use.[6]

  • Consider plastic where cleanability is central. Take “hygienic” as vendor positioning and ask for material or cleaning data if your sector requires it.[6]
  • Consider wood where the stated heavy-duty uses resemble the operation. Do not infer load capacity, durability or service life from those examples.[6]

Exporta positions its collars for compact, bulky or fragile products and says collapsed collars can save more than 80% of storage space; it does not publish independent test data for these claims.[5]

Agree a containment and return-loop trial

Give suppliers the goods, pallet base, usable internal dimensions, expected handling and return-storage needs. Ask a competent supplier to confirm the complete arrangement’s limits and conduct an agreed trial. Record fit, goods containment, lid engagement, folding, empty-return storage and any rejection criteria. These are proposed checks, not results of a test already performed.

Used pallet-collar inspection checklist

  • Boards: check for rot, mould and signs of insect infestation.[3]
  • Hinges and brackets: inspect for rust, damage or loose connections.[3]
  • Fit: confirm the collar is the correct size and configuration for your pallets.[3]
  • Wood treatment for reuse: Gumtree suggests considering the wood treatment used if collars will be reused for food storage or gardening, as some treatments may contain chemicals that can leach into soil.[3]
  • Export marking: if used collars will travel with exports, check that each one carries a legible ISPM15 mark.[7]

Universal Pallets says reconditioned units may carry markings or stamps and that appearance-specific stock can be hand-picked on request.[1] If appearance or marking legibility matters, include it in the order specification.

Ordering routes and commercial gaps

  • Universal Pallets: small and large orders, national next-day delivery service advertised, delivery charged at checkout.[1]
  • Davpack: online ordering with quantity discounts and an indicative standard lead time.[2]
  • boxesandcrates: small and bulk orders, collection from Oldbury or arranged delivery; trade pricing by quote.[4]
  • Exporta: online ordering across wooden, plastic and kit ranges.[5]
  • All Pallet Collars: small online orders, quotations and callbacks.[6]

A numerical price ranking is not supportable because listed prices change, and Davpack and All Pallet Collars show prices excluding VAT while Universal Pallets’ collar listing does not state the VAT basis.[1][2][6] Gumtree’s search results were mostly pallet-racking listings rather than collar offers, so they are not a reliable used-collar price benchmark.[3]

What to record before ordering

  • Product: exact SKU, condition grade, footprint, internal dimensions, material, collar height and lid specification.
  • Compatibility: written confirmation that the collar and lid fit the specific pallets in the pool.
  • Export evidence: ISPM15 treatment and marking for each solid-wood collar, and exemption basis for any plywood lid.[7]
  • Fulfilment: quantity, available stock, lead time, delivery area and charge, collection arrangements and any next-day delivery exclusions.
  • Comparable cost: VAT treatment, unit price, quantity breaks and minimum order.
  • Remedies and limits: load capacity, warranty, returns or cancellation rules and the process for rejecting damaged or incorrectly sized units.

Keep these written commitments separate from vendor claims about protection, durability, cost or space savings, which suppliers do not independently validate.
