What must a home-network backup power?
Back up every essential device in the connection path and size the UPS for the combined load. Keeping household equipment powered does not guarantee internet access: the provider’s external network must also remain available.[2][5]

A suitable UPS can support network equipment within its operating limits.[1][2] Build an inventory before buying:
- Cable: identify the modem and router, or the combined gateway.
- Fiber: include the ONT or connection box and the router; confirm the power arrangement with the provider.
- Mesh Wi-Fi: include the units required for essential coverage.
- Wired network: include any switch on the path to essential devices.
Mark devices as essential or optional and identify where each receives power. MEC recommends deciding which equipment must remain active before selecting backup features.[2] Use this inventory as a practical planning checklist; the required equipment depends on the actual installation.
Will powered equipment guarantee internet access?
No. Local power continuity and internet continuity are separate checks. nbn warns that outages can interrupt service despite network resilience and in-premises backup, including when an outage outlasts battery power.[5] This Australian operator example illustrates why a household UPS cannot establish an uptime promise for another ISP.
- Local power: each essential device must receive backup power within the UPS load and runtime limits.
- Outside connection: ask the ISP what remains available during an area outage and what dependencies exist upstream.
- Voice backup: check the specific service. Verizon says its described ONT Battery Backup Unit and PowerReserve options support basic voice but do not power Fios Internet or TV.[6] Do not assume every carrier’s voice-backup product also supplies broadband.
How to verify runtime for the complete load
A label or adapter rating is not an exact measurement of running power. Schneider Electric notes that equipment nameplate ratings are often above actual draw.[3] An adapter’s rated output describes its capacity, not what the connected router continuously consumes.
For this worksheet, use an appropriately rated plug-in power meter to measure each device with its normal adapter under representative use, following the meter and equipment instructions. Alternatively, use the manufacturer’s typical operating-power figure for the exact model and configuration, clearly marked as an estimate. Keep maximum ratings separate for capacity checks. Record the measurement conditions and any load variation; do not present an estimate as an exact value.

For an AC-output UPS, measuring at the devices’ adapter inputs includes those adapters in the protected load. Avoid substituting a DC output rating or the UPS’s own mains input draw for the connected equipment’s AC load. Ask the manufacturer for help if the measurement basis is unclear.
Compare this complete load with the exact UPS model’s official load-versus-runtime curve or selector. MEC directs buyers to manufacturer runtime information.[2] Check the hardware version, units and test conditions. If the chart does not cover your load, obtain manufacturer confirmation rather than extrapolating a runtime. A router-only claim does not establish runtime with an added ONT, switch or mesh unit.
Compare compact and tower UPS options
These are manufacturer-documented product examples, not a universal model ranking. The AVRG900LCD source describes a 120 V regional model; confirm local voltage, plugs and the exact product revision before buying.[1] The CP1500PFCLCD source is a historical manufacturer announcement, so confirm current specifications before ordering.[4]

CyberPower lists networking equipment among the AVRG900LCD applications.[1] The available specifications do not establish a runtime winner for your household load. This review could not retrieve the interactive low-load curves, so it gives no estimated minutes or hours for either model. Before purchase, confirm the runtime at your completed load through the manufacturer’s official runtime tool or support team.
UPS vs. portable power station
Use the same essential-device inventory for both. Compare available battery-backed connections, total operating load and the duration required. MEC identifies outlet count, voltage regulation and additional features as selection considerations for a UPS.[2]
For a portable power station, obtain the exact model’s documentation for continuous output, transfer behavior, supported backup operating mode and runtime at the proposed load. Do not assume it behaves like a UPS. Comparable Jackery model data has not been verified for this article, so there is no portable-station ranking or runtime promise.
Install and test the complete backup path
Follow the exact UPS manual for charging, placement, connections and testing. Plug essential equipment into the battery-backed outlets; keep surge-only outlets separate from battery-backed connections.[1] Include the normal adapters for the router, modem, ONT and other essential units in the load assessment.
During the manufacturer-approved test, record:
- which devices remain powered;
- whether local Wi-Fi remains available;
- whether internet access still works; and
- the observed support duration and load conditions.
A successful local test does not prove that the ISP network will survive a wider outage.[5] Repeat the load assessment after changing equipment. Keep your tested result separate from any manufacturer estimate.
