The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered Review — A Beautiful, Wonderful Mess

When people talk about The Elder Scrolls, most think of Skyrim. But long before that, Oblivion captured the hearts of RPG fans. Now, with a surprise announcement and immediate release, Oblivion Remastered brings us back to Cyrodiil — a world that’s just as charming, chaotic, and unforgettable as ever.

A Timeless Story That Needed No Changes

The remaster leaves the original narrative untouched — and that’s a good thing.

  • You start as a prisoner whose fate unexpectedly intertwines with the Emperor’s.

  • After his assassination, you’re tasked with saving Cyrodiil.

  • The main quest is strong, and the side quests remain some of Bethesda’s best.

  • The DLCs shine as always — with Shivering Isles still considered one of gaming’s best expansions.

The story hasn’t aged a day.

🎮 Massive Visual Upgrade: Truly a “Remastered” Look

The biggest transformation is visual. While not a full remake, the graphical overhaul is stunning:

  • New rendering via Unreal Engine;

  • Vastly improved landscapes, lighting, and architectural detail;

  • Walking out of the sewer for the first time is breathtaking again;

  • Character models are fully redone and actually resemble humans now.

It looks like a modern game — even if it plays like the original.

⚙️ Performance: Beautiful but Not Perfect

The visual boost comes with some drawbacks:

  • Poor performance on Steam Deck despite “Verified” status;

  • Occasional stutters and lighting glitches (especially with ray tracing);

  • Old bugs still exist, like quest NPCs getting stuck;

  • New bugs have appeared, such as equipment breaking in just a hit or two.

If you’re used to the classic “Bugthesda” charm, you’ll be fine. Otherwise, expect some rough edges.

🗺️ Gameplay: Still an Addictive Open World

Oblivion’s gameplay loop remains engaging:

  • Explore anywhere, do anything, level up by using your skills;

  • A huge world packed with quests, ruins, and discoveries;

  • Solid balance between Morrowind’s depth and Skyrim’s accessibility.

However, some flaws persist:

  • The leveling system is still messy and can make combat suddenly too hard;

  • Melee combat remains floaty and weightless;

  • Archery is unchanged and basic;

  • Magic effects look far better thanks to remastered particles.

It’s still incredibly fun — just undeniably old-school.

🧙‍♂️ Characters & Voice Acting: A Major Glow-Up

The remaster shines brightest in character presentation:

  • All character models rebuilt (goodbye to potato faces);

  • Argonians and Khajiit look especially impressive;

  • Lip-syncing is far better, matching original performances surprisingly well;

  • Additional voice actors add diversity to NPC dialogue.

And yes — they even left in the famous “double take” recording mistake from the original. Fans will appreciate this.

The Bugs Are Back — And Still Hilarious

While some bugs affect gameplay, most are just comical:

  • Enemies flying around due to physics glitches;

  • Duplicate Emperor spawns during the intro scene;

  • Odd animations and classic Bethesda weirdness.

It’s part of the game’s identity — frustrating yet weirdly charming.
